"It's a 1961 Comet — Not a Mercury"

Cllent Walker, Past Club President and Funeral Director by profession, asked us, "Do you remember your first car?"

Clent never forgot his — a 1961 Comet.  For many years, his mother kept it for him back in Georgia, before he finally brought it out to Arizona, to begin painstakingly restoring what had become, by that time, a rusted-out relic.  He shared with us the fascinating saga of how he, along with the help of his son Joshua, rebuilt the engine and restored every part of this treasured first car he owned over a period of 6 years.  He was quick to point out to us, at the beginning, that his 1961 Comet is strictly a Comet — a stand-alone brand produced by Ford Motor Company.  Prior to that time, the name was used as a model of Edsel, and after that time, it became a model of Mercury.

It was a great program — as have been other ones our club members have been willing to share about their "other life" hobbies and passions.  Is there some aspect of your life and interests, so far unknown to the rest of us, which you would be willing to present as a program for one of our club meetings?  If so, please let Tim Wiederaenders, our Program Committee Chair know.  We would love to hear from you!

Thanks, Clent!  What a great storyof persistence and ingenuity!

SOME INTERESTING ROTARY FIRSTS!

(Borrowed from PDG Wilma Basnett Emerson's West Side Story, the West Phoenix Rotary Club's newsletter)

•  The first Rotary club meeting was in Chicago on February 23, 1905.
•  The first regular luncheon meetings were at the Oakland, CA, club, chartered in 1909.
•  The first Rotary convention was in Chicago in 1910.
•  The first Rotary club outside of the US was formed in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, in 1910.
•  The first Rotary club outside of North America was formed in Dublin, Ireland, in 1911.
•  The first Rotary club in a non-English-speaking country was in Havana, Cuba, in 1916.
•  The first Rotary club in South America was chartered in Montevideo, Uruguay, in 1918.
•  The first Rotary club in Asia was chartered in Manila, Philippines, in 1919.
•   The first Rotary club in Africa was chartered in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1921.
•  The first Rotary club in Australia was chartered in Melbourne in 1921.

Was Paul Harris the first president of a Rotary club? No. Was Paul Harris the first president of Rotary International? Yes. There is an easy explanation to this apparent contradiction. Although Paul Harris was the founder and organizer of the first Rotary club in Chicago in 1905, the man selected to be the first club president was one of the other founding members, Silvester Schiele.

By 1910, there were 16 Rotary clubs, which formed an organization called the National Association of Rotary clubs. Two years later it was changed to the International Association of Rotary Clubs to reflect the addition of clubs in Canada, England, Ireland, and Scotland. In 1922, the name was shortened to Rotary International. When the first organization of Rotary clubs was created in 1910, Paul Harris was selected as the first president. He served in this position for two years—1910 to 1912. Thus, the founder of the Rotary idea, who declined to be president of the first club, became the first president of the worldwide organization, Rotary International.

What an unlikely trio!  We helped Clent Walker, Todd Clancy and Gus Bergman celebraate their birthdays together at Sunup Rotary last Wednesday.  For sure, this photo will become a collector's item someday — definitely a fun remembrance of Christy Manning's term as our Club President..  She has taken seriously the admonition to "HAVE FUN!"

YOUTH SERVICE

Sophia Brown was specially honored by our Sunup Rotary Club for her Extraordinary Interact leadership by making her a Paul Harris Fellow.  As Club President of our PHS Interact Club, she has led that club this year to new heights in the club's size, organization and accomplishments.  As an Interact Assistant Governor, in addition to working with her assigned clubs, she is responsoble for two new middle school Interact Clubs.  Last summer she also served as an Interact Ambassador ro Kenya.  This year she was named as the Interactor of the Year by our Interact District 5495.  We are so very proud of our own Sophia Brown and her accomplishments, and we are looking forward to what she will be able to do next year, teaming with BMHS Interact President Hugo Garcia, to reactivate and revitalize the NAU Rotaract Club.  President Christy Manning is pinning Sophia with her new Paul Harris Fellow pin in this photo.

Isabella Parra and her parents were our guests at our meeting this past week.  She is the first recipient of the $3,000 Bergman Family Medical Arts Scholarship.  She is pictured here with Dr. Gus Bergman, who has instituted this scholarship for selected youth who are going into the medical profession.  Isabella will be attending Northern Arizona University, planning to prepare to become a psychiatric nurse.

Past President Richard Hernandez was at Bradshaw Mountain High School's awards program to present to Hugo Garcia one of our Sunup Rotary Club's $3,000 scholarships.  Hugo has been serving as the Club President of the thriving BMHS Interact Club this year, as well as being an Interact Assistant Governor.  He will be traveling as a member of our Interact Ambassadors to Mexico team this summer.  He will be attending Northern Arizona University.

The Prez Says
Christy Manning

This weekend, I had the pleasure of attending the third and final session of the Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI). With that, I’m proud to share that I’ve officially graduated!

RLI is a three-part series that deepens your understanding of Rotary, not just what we do in our own club, but the broader impact we have around the world. It also highlights the incredible resources available to us through the organization’s vast network.

I highly encourage any member in a leadership role or anyone passionate about improving and growing our club to attend these sessions. The insights you gain from the trainers and fellow Rotarians are truly invaluable and can help take our club to the next level.

Looking forward to seeing you all on Wednesday!
