Our District Interactors Leading Interact Global Schisto Project
Art Harrington, Isabelle Brown, Sophia Brown and Pres. Christy Manning

The dynamic sister duo, Sophia and Isabelle Brown, from our Prescott High Interact Club, were invited to share with our club the news about one of the most exciting worldwide developments in Rotary this year, which is actually being led by the Interact leadership of our own District 5495. As Rotary has long led the fight to ericicate Polio, Interact. (kids helping kids), has been asked to lead the initiative to eventually wipe out Schistosomiasis.

We learned that Schistosomiasis is a topical parasitic disease which affects 250 million each year, including 80 million children, and that 200,000 die from it each year.  Up until a little over a year ago, there had been no approved treatment for pediatric Schistosomiasis.  However, there was a breakthrough, with a new 5-pill treatment developed by Merck, which was aproved for by the European Union in December 2023.  Merck is making these 5-pill packs, which kill the parasitic worms in a child, and can save the child's life, for their cost of just $2 to manufacture, package and ship.  Most heavily affected are 6 countries in sub-Saharan Africa.  The decision has been made to start with Tanzania, and to expand to another country each year.  A Rotary Foundation Global Grant, to be sponsored by the Phoenis 100 Rotary Club, is expected to leverage the amount of funds which Interactors around the world will be working on raising from Interact, Rotaract and Rotary Clubs.to purchase the $2 life-saving pill packets.

With our Interact Distrct 5495's established reputation as the international service leader, the student leadership of our district has been working with the Global Health Schistosomiasis Committee, and they have been developing the program and the materials to implement a worldwide Interact initiative against this deadly disease. The Interact Global Schisto Project will have a booth in the House of Friensshiip at the 2025 Rotary International Convention in Calgary this summer, where these materials will be used and distributed to the expected 35,000 Rotarian convention-goers from around the world..

The Prez Says
Christy Manning
We had a truly inspiring meeting last week with Sophia and her sister, Isabelle.  These Interact students continue to impress with their passion, leadership, and dedication.  Sophia has made a tremendous impact during her time with Interact and as our District Governor. It is clear that Isabelle is already following in her footsteps.

A big thank you to everyone who supported their fundraiser at Colt Grill by buying tickets!  Your generosity helps empower these amazing high school students as they live out Rotary’s mission of “Service Above Self.”

Interact is more than just a student club…it’s a powerful bridge between youth and Rotary, fostering leadership, service and a commitment to making a difference.  As Rotarians, supporting Interact is one of the most meaningful ways to help shape the future.

See you all on Wednesday!
