As we move into a new Rotary year, our club meeting this Wednesday will feature a Club Assembly.  Rotary generally recommends that clubs have a quarterly, or at least a semi-annual, Club Assembly, as a time for club members to meet with their club leaders to assess where a club is going, how it is doing, and to encourage input from the members.  If a club has developed a Strategic Plan for a 3-5-year period, as Rotary recommends, Club Assemblies are also an opportunity to assess how a club is progressing in implementing its plan, and meeting its goals.  

 

CORRECTION:  In our feature article last week, it was stated that the District Conference this year will be held in Puerto Vallarta.  The Conference will, in fact, be held in Puerto Peñasco.  As DG Kevin Pitts notes, this will be an easy drive for our district's Rotarians.

 

 

PDG Ron Roderique • January 10, 1930 - June 27, 2023

 

As a banker, Ron was the one who brought the first ATMs, known back then as "the Ugly Tellers," to Arizona.  As a 50-year Rotarian, Ron has ben one of the Rotary giants who helped shape what Rotary is today in our state.  He served as District Governor of D5490, the predecessor of our current D5495, in 1991-92, and has continued to serve in countless leadership capacities since then.  Whether it was heading up Arizona Rotary's Gift of Life project, which saved the lives of so many impoverished children with heart defects by bringing them, accompanied by a parent, to Phoenix for surgery to repair their hearts, or sending more than 500 wheelchairs to give the gift of mobility to the disabled poor in Mexico, or working with his PDG wife Norma Taylor to develop her model Heather Kinross Low Cost Housing Project, which transformed the Sierra Norte region of central Mexico, near Puebla, from abject poverty to now thriving communities, or developing training programs for Rotary club officers, or editing district newsletters, Ron was an innovator and an achiever of so much which has strengthened Rotary in Arizona.  A Celebration of Life was held in remembrance of Ron last Saturday at the All-Saints Lutheran Church in Phoenix.  Our sympathy is extended to Norma and her family.

 

 

 

Update on Jerry Fohrman:  Janet posted on Friday: "Another day of progress! Less pain, a hint of an appetite and feeling a little happier. We still don't know when he will be transferred out or where he will be going but we do know we are grateful and blessed."

After spending a week with the Maasai people, before leaving for Naivasha, our Ambassadors team got up early to climb the water tower above Prescott College's Dopoi Center, where them have been based, to view for a last time the spectacular sunrise over the Maasai Mara.  They are pictured here atop that water tower, wrapped in their colorful Maasai shukas.
