President Laura receives one of Rotary District 5495's traveling Friendship Trophies from Allie Raugust, President of the Rotary Club of Prescott. Allie was accompanied by three of her club's members in making her friendship visit. Laura will be arranging a friendship visit, along with several of our members, to the Rotary Club of Anthem, to present the trophy to that club's President. District Governor Kevin Pitts had three of these beautiful Friendship Trophies made this year to encourage our districts' clubs to pay each other visits to increase dialogue and to generate more cooperative projects between the clubs. President Laura Vanderberg, during her President's Choice Program, also announced that, beginning November 18th, her future third Wednesday of the month President's Choice Program meetings will be held as Happy Hour Mixers beginning at 5:15 p.m. We will not be meeting at our regular breakfast time on those mornings. Club members will be encouraged to bring family, friends and other guests for them to experience Rotary and enjoy networking, fun and fellowship. Some of the other dates she announced in her PowerPoint have changed, so you are are encouraged to download the updated list of correct dates for coming events which were emailed to you by Club Secretary Stella Ortiz.   THE ROTARY FLAG An official flag was formally adopted by Rotary International at the 1929 RI Convention in Dallas, Texas. The Rotary flag consists of a white field with the official wheel emblem emblazoned in gold in the center of the field. The four depressed spaces on the rim of the Rotary wheel are colored royal blue. The name Rotary International printed at the top and bottom depressions on the wheel rim are also gold. The shaft in the hub and the keyway of the wheel are white. The first Rotary flag reportedly was flown in Kansas City, Missouri in January 1915. In 1926, a small Rotary flag was carried over the North Pole by Admiral Richard Byrd, a member of the Rotary Club of Winchester, Virginia. In 1920, the admiral carried a Rotary flag in his expedition to the South Pole. During Rotary's centennial year, 2004-05, Rotarian and Rotaract climbers carried flags to the top of Mount McKinley and Mount Everest. Some Rotary clubs use the official Rotary flag as a banner at club meetings. In these instances, it is appropriate to print the words Rotary Club above the wheel symbol and the club's name below the emblem. The Rotary flag is always prominently displayed at RI World Headquarters and at all RI conventions and official events. CLUB SERVICE President Laura reminded us that Sunup Rotary utilizes our district's Rotary Leadership Institute for club member training. This program, which is used by more that 400 of the Rotary districts around the world, consists of three levels of one-day classes. The courses at each level cost $60, including the training materials and the lunch. Our club reimburses each member who participates in RLI this $60 registration fee. Usually four RLI sessions are scheduled each year, with the locations being rotated around the district, to make them as accessible as possible to the members of our clubs across our geographically-sprawling district. The next RLI session will be held on Saturday, November 18, at the Mohave Community College in Kingman. As anyone who has attended RLI anywhere will tell you, one of the most appreciated benefits of this training program is the opportunity to participate in interactive classes with members of other Rotary clubs from different parts of our district — getting acquainted with them, listening to their ideas, and learning how their Rotary clubs function. Whether you are new to Rotary, or a seasoned veteran, there is always something of value to be learned in each of the three levels of RLI, which makes it well-worth the investment of your time. And if you are traveling with another club member to one of these RLI sessions, that in itself increases the benefit of each trip. COMMUNITY SERVICE Jane Anne Shimizu was serving this past weekend at the Fall Fest on the Prescott Courtyard Square, wearing her Sunup badge, representing Prescott Sunup Rotary. Todd is reminding us that this Saturday is our semi-annual Roadside Cleanup of our section of highway 89, just south of Prescott. Highway Cleanup Chair Matt Greenlee says we will be meeting, as usual, at 8:00 a.m. in the Safeway parking lot on White Spar. Donuts will be provided, but you will need to bring your own coffee — along with your work gloves and a cap or hat. YOUTH SERVICE You are encouraged to do your hardware shopping for home repair and other projects this month at the Ace Hardware in Prescott Valley, 7211 E. First Street. For a second year, the proceeds from their Register Roundup will benefit our Interact Crutches 4 Africa project and Interact Ambassadors program. Our Joint Sunup Rotary and PHS Interact Crutches Rehab Project will take begin at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21, at Ron Williams' Ponderosa Mini-Storage, 555 N. 6th Street in Prescott. INTERNATIONAL SERVICE  Don't miss the incredible opportunity to listen-in and participate in this year's Mexico-USA Friendship Conference and Global Grants Exchange, on October 27-29, with it being right here in our own town! You may prefer instead to just sit in on the projects fair on Friday and Saturday at Prescott College to witness the presentations of the proposed international service projects, which will be vying for pledged funds from the clubs to help elevate them to the point where they will qualify to gain matching Global Grant funding from The Rotary Foundation.
