 Ever since Dan Palm spoke to our club several years ago, our program committee has been wanting to bring him back. Dan serves as the Associate Vice President for Global Affairs and CEO of UA Global Operations at the University of Arizona. In addition to having lived in China for 5 years, Dan has been traveling the world promoting higher education for the past 18 years. His assessment of current conditions, including the global challenges and opportunities he believes to exist within our tri-polar world economy (the U.S., Russia and China), is fascinating, to say the least! Whereas 3 years ago he had told us about China's increasing wealth and power, its leadership's shutting down the economy during the pandemic has left the country bankrupt and in dire economic straits. Its decreasing population is also factoring into the country's struggle to rebuild its economy. With Russia's invasion of the Ukraine, its leadership has been proving they do not care how their population is affected by their government's decisions, regardless of the costs, including lives. By comparison, the U.S. has been emerging in the eyes of the world as the most respected power. Dan predicted that Africa will experience tremendous growth over the next 20 years. He expects its population will grow to a billion, and he notes its growing economy. He also pointed out the number of major corporations which are opening plants in northern Mexico, and he expects continuing economic growth in that country. While India is considered to be one of our partners, Dan says they are not a dependable one. Among other things, India is purchasing 2.2 million gallons of gas from Russia on a daily basis, helping to shore up Russia's struggling economy. He also discussed our country's strategic positioning of military bases, including a couple of new ones in the Philippines, since much of Asia relies on U.S. security.   The Story Behind Rotary’s Four-Way Test Back in the 1930s Herbert J. Taylor, the owner of the Club Aluminum Products Company, with 250 employees at the time, realized his company was in financial trouble, and it was about to go under. Taylor believed he was the only person in his company who had any hope of saving it. His recovery plan started with changing the ethical climate of his company. He believed if he could get his employees to think right, they would do right. His creation and adoption of this four-way test to serve as a guide for his company’s employees, as they worked with each other, and as they served the company’s customers, did turn his company around and saved it. Later on, during the time that Rotarian Herbert Taylor was serving as one of the Directors of Rotary International, his Four-Way Test was adopted by Rotary in 1943 to become Rotary’s ethical yardstick “of the things we think, say and do.” You will find that numerous other businesses and organizations today have also adopted Rotary’s Four-Way Test. CLUB SERVICE We recently noted the passing of Stan Steiner, longtime member of Sunup Rotary from 1998-2023. Stan was a U.S. Army Medical Corp Veteran, and long served as a Rotary club's Membership Chair. A memorial service will be held for Stan at 10:00 a.m. this Friday, August 11, at the Prescott National Cemetery. A luncheon will follow in the Activities Center of the American Lutheran Church, located at 1085 Scott Drive, here in Prescott. __ The Jerry Fohrman Memorial Service: Thanks to all of our Sunup Rotarians who attended in great numbers the very fitting and moving tribute to this beloved Past President of our club. VOCATIONAL SERVICE Bob Keys, our club's Vocational Service Director, has asked us to again print this appeal from Tabitha Fedina at Yavapai College: Hello! My name is Tabitha Fedina, and I am the Internship Coordinator for Division 3 at Yavapai College. I wanted to reach out and introduce myself as well as Yavapai College’s NEW Bachelor of Science Business Degree. With this degree students will have the opportunity to gain valuable work experience and professional skills through the power of internships. We are currently looking to partner with local businesses in order to provide experiential learning opportunities for our students for the Spring 2024 semester. Areas we are seeking internship opportunities in include Accounting, Entrepreneurship, Business Organizational Management and Leadership, Paralegal Studies, Administration of Justice, Visual, Fine, and Performing Arts. We are also seeking to add local mentors to our Mentorship Partnership Program for the Spring semester. In this program a business professional will be paired with 1-3 students to mentor in their specific area of study: Accounting, Entrepreneurship, or Business Organizational Management and Leadership. They will be able to connect with the incoming workforce, build exposure for their business, as well as help guide and shape students’ career goals.
