Darla DeVille Enlightens Club About the APS Source of Our Power
We were delighted to have Darla DeVille, the Community Affairs Manager at Arizona Public Service Company, to speak to us about the state's largest and longest-serving energy provider.  The company has 6.300 employees.  Darla is responsible for overseeing operational strategies and initiatives. Her role includes managing team performance and project execution, enhancing customer service and community engagement, and collaborating with stakeholders to ensure regulatory compliance.  We were interested to learn that Darla was a member of a Rotary Club in Hawaii, before moving to Arizona (and Sarah is already following up on that!).

Darla says APS is committed to using AI and all other new technology to generate safe, reliable and affordable energy for approximately 1.4 million customers in Arizona.  Their service territory stretches across the state, from the border town of Douglas to the vistas of the Grand Canyon, from the solar fields in Gila Bend to the ponderosa pines of Payson. It is also interesting to learn that APS employees volunteer more than 80,000 hours in the community, and the company contributes more than $10 million to charitable causes.

HOW SUCCESSFUL HAS OUR EFFORT BEEN TO ERADICATE POLIO?

Because of Rotary's support, nearly 3 billion children have been immunized against polio and are protected for life against this crippling disease.

Rotary and our partners have reduced the number of wild polio cases from 350,000 in 1988 to only 36 cases so far in 2025 (7 in Afghanistan, and 29 in Pakistan).. Twenty million cases of paralysis have been averted through this global effort.

The wild poliovirus is now endemic in just two countries, and Rotary won't stop until there is a polio-free world!

Old age has come at a bad time.
Just as I was beginning to know everything,
I’m now forgetting everything I knew.

An elderly man lay on his deathbed, surrounded by his wife, three kids, and a nurse.  With a deep breath, he began speaking:
"Bill, you get the Beverly Hills houses.
Mary, the offices in the center are yours.
Debra, the apartments over the L.A. Plaza are all yours.
And my dear wife, you take all the residential buildings near downtown."
The nurse, wide-eyed, said, "Wow, your husband must've been an incredible man to amass so much property to leave behind."
The wife sighed and replied, "What property?  The guy had a paper route!"

SPEAKER:  Marsha & Todd, Facilitators
SUBJECT: TABLE TALK
A Follow-up to Brainstormiong Session on Club Projects

The Prez Says

Laura Vanderberg, Co-President

This week we get to do what SunUp does best—come together with purpose, laughter, and impact.

On Wednesday, it’s SunUp Time! We’ll dive into how our Club is organized—how all the pieces click together and how you make the difference. It’s a chance to see the big picture and find where your energy can shine brightest!

Then on Saturday, spice things up at our Chili Cook-Off Fundraiser! It’s fun, flavorful, and fuels the impact we make in our community. Whether you’re volunteering, tasting, or just soaking up the laughter, your presence turns up the heat!

These moments remind us that Rotary isn’t just about meetings or fundraisers—it’s about connection, contribution, and joy. Let’s show up for each other and keep building the spirit that makes SunUp Rotary shine as a cause for good!

See you on Wednesday and Saturday!

Kind Regards,

Laura
