Operating in tight quarters, due to a conference at the Hassayampa needing our meeting room, outgoing President Laura Vanderberg and incoming President Christy Manning teamed up at our meeting last week to highlight some of the past year's accomplishments and to pave the way for the new year under Christy's leadership. The Sunup Duck Race was officially adopted by the club as our primary club fundraiser going forward, and some helpful insights from our recent Duck Race were identified and discussed, to help assure the success of the next one. John Stewart, Sunup's former National League umpire, presented a NL baseball to Laura in appreciation for her club leadership and service over the past two years. Toby Chang, one of our Sunup Scholarship winners this year, thanked our club for our support of his education, and explained that he will be first doing an internship in India with an international nonprofit charitable organization, before beginning his college studies. POLIO ERADICATION - Rotary's #1 Priority Transmission of wild poliovirus halted in southern Africa Swift action and improved surveillance ended the spread of wild poliovirus type 1 in Malawi and Mozambique. An expert team that performed thorough assessments recommends officially declaring the outbreak to be over — a huge victory in the effort against polio in Africa.
The last case of wild poliovirus type 1 in the World Health Organization’s African Region, linked to a strain circulating in Pakistan, was reported in Mozambique’s Tete Province in August 2022. Nine cases overall were detected in Mozambique and neighboring Malawi, where the outbreak was declared in February 2022.
In response to the outbreak, more than 50 million children received vaccinations to shield them from the virus. This successful coordinated effort underscores the power of collaboration and the need for a timely response in safeguarding communities against infectious diseases. |

CLUB SERVICE CORRECTIONS from last week's issue: Lisa Doherty is the club's new Communications Chair. Tim Wiederaenders was in charge of the scheduling of the Snack Shack volunteers this past year, but he was not the Snack Shack Chair, as reported. Reminder: No Meeting this Wednesday, due to holiday. YOUTH SERVICE Art Harrington, District Interact Chair, and Kayla Mudge, Ambassadors Program Coordinator, were among those on hand at Phoenix Sky Harbor Tuesday evening to welcome back our 2024 Interact Ambassadors Team from their service in central Mexico. working with ALEM, the amazing wheelchair mechanics, to help enable the disabled in that country. Having flown out of Phoenix Sky Harbor this past Friday morning, and after more that 30 hours of air travel on a succession of 3 flights, our Interact Ambassadors to Kenya team still looked in good shape when they finally landed in Nairobi, Kenya. Dr. Mary Poole (in blue) was waiting in Nairobi with this van to transport our Ambassadors team on the 4-hourt drive to the Dopoi Center at Talek, where they will be based during their first week in Kenya. Mary, who is a former member of Sunup Rotary, co-founded and co-directs the Prescott College field station in Kenya, the Dopoi Center, with her Colleague Meitamei Olol Dapash. The Center is hosted on Indigenous land by the Maasai community, next to the Maasai Mara Game Reserve. Mary's work involves Maasai community land rights and cultural survival.  If someone has a mid-life crisis while playing hide & seek, do they automatically lose, because they can’t find themselves? __ I just found out I'm colorblind. The diagnosis came completely out of the purple. __ The older I get, the more I regret all the people I've lost over the years. Maybe trail guide was not the best career after all.

Two boll weevils grew up in South Carolina. One went to Hollywood and became a famous actor. The other stayed behind in the cotton fields and never amounted to much. The second one naturally became known as the lesser of two weevils. __ Three couples decided to meet at a local diner for breakfast, and while they were eating the first husband looks lovingly at his wife and said to her, "Please pass the honey, honey." Well the second husband thinks to himself, “I need to step up his game,” so he looks at his wife and said, "Please pass the sugar, sugar."
The third husband starts to panic because he needs to hit his comment out of the park. So he holds his wife's hands and looks romantically into her eyes and says, "Please pass the tea...bag..."
