A.J. Sheridan, immediate-Past RYLA Chair, with Giada Glennan, RYLArian from Prescott High School
Rotary'sYouth Services Programs (Interact RYLA and Rotary Yoiuth Exchange) are all about developing young leaders who are motivated by Rotary to be People of Action, who are committed to Rotary's life philosophy of putting Service Above Self, and who are guided by Rotary's Four-Way Test of the things they think, say and do. Giada Glennan is one of those young leaders in whom we, as Sunup Rotarians, have been investing. She is the current Vice President of our PHS Interact Club, was a delegate to this year's RYLA, and she is in training to travel and serve this summer as a member of our 2026 Interact Ambassadors to Kenya team, who will be working with the disabled poor in that country.
A.J. Sheridan selected Giadia, who was one of the PHS Interact members our club sponsored with scholarships to participate as a delegate to our district's Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) camp, to come and share with our club what that intense leadership development experience was like. RYLA was held at Camp Pinerock in January. She said that working with a team of youth from other parts of Arizona, whom she had never before met, was at first a bit intimidating. However, she was surprised at how quickly the members of the team bonded into a caring family, which was able to encourage and support each other as the team moved through a rigorous program of challenges, designed to push each person beyond the limits they had previously set for themselves. She mentioned some of those challenges where the team had helped her deal with such things as her fear of height and of public speaking. She felt the experience was one of tremendoius personal value, as she continues to discover and develop her leadership abilities.
Giada's program was concise, and not long. It left appreciated time for Pres-Elect Russ Davis to sit down with some of oiur club members after the meeting, to begin working on a budget for the next Rotary year, beginning July 1.
The biggest event of every year is the Rotary International Convention. It moves to a different location every year, and this year it is being held in Taipei, Taiwan. Last summer 35,000 Rotarians from around the world gathered for this event in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
