Joseph Weisner, a Prescott resident, shared with our club at last Wednesday's meeting a project which has become his passion. Working with Eden International, a nonprofit organization in Antigua, Guatemala, and with Annie and Rodolfo, the couple who founded Eden, Weisner is seeking to raise funds to purchase a small used bus, equipped with a wheelchair lift, which he can ship to Guatemala to aid in transporting the disabled individuals to the services which Eden is able to provide to them. He believes he can purchase a suitable used vehicle for this purpose for $10,000, and he expects it will take another $5,000 to ship it to Guatemala. For additional information about this project, and information on how you can contribute to this endeavor, visit this website: www.edenguatemala.com. What we can do together is always so much greater than what we can do on our own. Coupled with an awareness of the needs which exist around us here, and in other communities around the world, the opportunities are endless for what we can together potentially accomplish as Rotarians, Rotaractors and Interactors — all united to make good things happen! CLUB SERVICE THE GOVERNOR IS COMING!! The biggest news for our Sunup Rotary Club this week is that we will be hosting our Rotary District Governer, Jim Schmidt, at our club meeting this Wednesday for his official visit. A longtime Rotarian, and member of the Mesa West Rotary Club, Jim is already demonstating his outstanding leadership abilities in energizing and inspiring our Rotary District this year. You won't want to miss the opportunity to meet and hear this great Rotary leader speak about what you can expect on the Rotary Road ahead. COMMUNITY SERVICE What a fantastic Rotary-led crew we had early last Friday morning in Prescott Valley for the placing of the flags at the Memorial Healing Fields! This memorial commemorates both the 9-11 terrorist attack victims and our 19 Granite Mountain Hotshots Marsha Teller did an exceptional job of recruiting voluinteers for this project. In a note from her, she says, "Please mention a big thank you to Sunup, Frontier, Prescott and Prescott Valley Rotarians, as well as to Touchmark at the Ranch, and the Embry Riddle Silver Wings Rotaractors. This was a great turnout, and a way for all of us to support our community. They appreciated it so much!" There will be a Chili Cookoff Meeting following our Wednesday meeting. Please come and support this project ! BUNDLES OF LOVE DIAPER DRIVE President’s Choice: October 8th, 5:00 p.m. Diaper Drive for Bundles of Love has begun! They are in critical need of sizes 4, 5, and 6 diapers as well as any size Pull Ups. Please bring your donation to the meeting or have them shipped through Target and Amazon to the following address for Marsha Teller: Marsha Teller, 6849 Golden Tree Drive, Prescott, Az 86305 (This may be helpful to those who would prefer not toting the boxes to the meeting. Just a note that Amazon has very reasonable diapers which are less expensive than the big brand names.) We will culminate this project on October 8th which is our President's Choice meeting at the Hassayampa in the evening. Lori Deutsch, coordinator for Bundles of Love, will be there and will direct us on packaging them for delivery. Thank you ahead for your continued generosity. How else can you help? To encourage reading readiness for these families, Bundles of Love is looking for barely used or new books, specifically picture or board books. They will be sent along with their diaper package. What a fantastic idea to bring reading readiness to these families! The need is great and our deadline is October 8th. As always, thank you for supporting our community. Marsha Teller, Community Service Director YOUTH SERVICE When it was announced at PHS Interact Club's first meeting of this school year that there would be a special meeting held the next week for all who may have an interest in serving as an officer, or in club leadership, you will see in the photo above the 20 youth who showed up for that potential leaders meeting. WOW! What do you suppose our Rotary Club might be able to learn from our Interact Club? Ceiba Sherman is doing a great job leading this club as its President. Ceiba also served as an Interact Ambassador to Kenya this summer, and she is one of our Interact District Assistant Governors. INTERNATIONAL SERVICE A couple of weeks ago, we reported that SangKoo Yun, from Korea, who was to be our RI President next year, felt it necessary to submit his resignation as the RI Pres-Elect to the RI Board of Directors, due to his rapidly progressing pancreatic cancer. Our Rotary Family around the world was saddened this weekend with the news that SangKoo has died. Please remember his wife and family in your thoughts and prayers. Hired a handy man and gave him a list. When I got home, only items 1, 3 & 5 were done. Turns out, he only does odd jobs. __ Q - What did one pencil say to the other on the first day of school? A - Looking sharp! __ I accidentally used dog shampoo today. I feel like such a good boy. __ Research shows that laughing for 2 minutes is just as healthy as a 20 min. jog. So now I’m sitting in the park laughing at all the joggers. __ When older people say, “Enjoy them while they are young,” They are talking about your knees and hips, not your kids.” __ Sign: “Cashier Wanted, Must be 18 years old with 20 years experience.” (Math skills are apparently optional.) __ Last night I yanked out a couple of nose hairs, just to see if it hurt. Judging by how fast my husband woke up screaming… I’m guessing the answer is YES. __ When I told you I was normal, I may have exaggerated slightly. __ |
