Joe Konkel Enlightens with Ranch Histories

For most of us, who are relatively "late arrivals" in this area, the names of many places and developments have little meaning,  However, after listening to Joe Konkel's fascinating stories about the Ranch Family Histories of this part of the state, we learned that many of these developments were once part of some very large ranches.  Joe tald us not only about the ranches, but he also narrated for us colorful tales of the some of the individuals and families who acquired, built and worked those ranches.  A number of them have helped to shape our community and its services we enjoy through their philanthropy.

We have had the privilege of having Joe Konkel with us on previous occasions, related to the annual Cowboy Poets Gathering,  He has emerged as the Historian of that event; and each year, based on his research, the Cowboy Poets Gathering features a diffeent ranch family..

Thank you, Joe, for enlightening us!  We will look forward to your next visit.

Rotary brings out the Super-Hero in all of us.  Putting "Service Above Self," Rotarians each day look for opportunities to meet needs and to make a difference in other people's lives.  Sometimes we act alone, and other times we enlist the help of our fellow-Rotarians.  As the result, individually and together we are helping to make this workd a bettert place.

Today, find the Hero within you, and bless someone with an Act of Kindness!

ROTARY DISTRICT NEWS

Legendary Arizona State University and Dallas Cowboys Quarterback Danny White, who also led that team to a Super Bowl victory, held the Saturday evening audiece at this year's District Conference spellbound with his football stories and related lessons of life.  Among his most surprising revelations was the fact that, in addition to playng football at the schoool, he was the Club President of the Westwood High School Interact Club in 1970.    This remarkable Interact Club, which last year celebrated its 60th Annivery of service, has continued to produce leaders over the years — including this year's and last year's Interact District Governors.

I didn’t realize how bad my driving was, until my GPS said:
“In 400 feet, do a slight right, stop, and let me out.”

Q - Where do bad rainbows go?
A - To prism.  It’s a light sentence, but it gives them time to reflect…

I became so confused last night when my printer started playing music.
It turns out it the paper was just jamming.

Q – Why do scuba divers fall backwards when they go into the water?
A - If they fell forwards, they’d still be in the boat.

This past weekend, Art, AJ, and I had the pleasure of attending our District Conference, and what an incredible experience it was! It was a powerful way to celebrate all the amazing work happening throughout our district and to be reminded of the impact we make as Rotarians.
Personally, I walked away with a deeper understanding of Rotary and a renewed sense of pride in what we do. It also gave me the opportunity to see, firsthand, the incredible leadership and dedication within our own club. Art continues to make a tremendous impact through his work with Interact, and AJ’s leadership with RYLA is nothing short of inspiring. Their efforts are truly helping to shape the next generation of leaders.

The conference also provided a valuable opportunity to network and connect with members from other clubs. We shared ideas, stories, and common goals—all reinforcing the shared mission that binds us together.
One of the highlights was hearing from a Rotary International representative on behalf of the President, Stephanie Urchick. The insights and inspiration shared reminded us of the global reach of our organization and the meaningful change we contribute to, both locally and around the world.

But perhaps the most moving part of the weekend was hearing from the Interact students. Watching them take the stage, speak with such passion, and share how Rotary has shaped their lives was incredibly heartening. It reaffirmed the importance of the work we do with youth—an area where our club shines brightly.

I left the conference with new knowledge, meaningful connections, and a deep sense of pride in being a Rotarian. I'm excited to carry that energy forward and continue building on the great work we’re doing together.

I'll see you all on Wednesday!
