Kenya Rotarians to Visit Sunup
Several years ago our Sunup Rotary Club partnered with the Rotary Club in Naivasha, Kenya, using a Rotary Foundation Global Grant, to drill a water well and create a water distribution system that would benefit a school, along with more than 3,000 residents of a Maasai village.  Due to a number of complications, the project has taken more time than expected to complete, along with a much larger financial investment by our partner club.  This summer, during the time our Interact Ambassadors to Kenya were being hosted by the Naivasha Rotary Club, the water from the new well the club had paid to drill finally flowed.

It is a rare occasion when international partners in such a project have the opportunity to personally meet.  However, that is going to be our great privilege when some members of the Navaisha Rotary and Rotaract Clubs will be our special guests at our club meeting on November 28.  Since visa approvals are still pending, we are not yet certain of the number that will be coming, but we believe there will be 6 - 15 in the group, which is expected to be touring and hosted by Rotary clubs here in Arizona between Nov. 20 - 30, before they return to Kenya.

We expect to have more details about their schedule and home hosting opportunities within the next couple of weeks.  In the meantime, be sure to mark your calendar, and plan to attend this very special club meeting on November 28.

Meeting Highlights:

George Steiner was welcomed back along with his guest Carl Olding. Richard Hernandez thanked everyone for bringing items for the Yavapai College Pantry Halloween food drive. John Stewart encouraged members to walk, ride, or eat candy in the upcoming Veterans Day Parade.

Great Extractions:

Jane Anne Shimizu was Sarge and George Steiner toted the pot. Everyone not in Halloween costume paid a buck. Barbara Oemcke paid up for all the new construction projects at VA. Tony Shaw was fined for his Halloween shirt. Richard Hernandez was happy for the three boxed filled with food drive donations. Art Harrington was happy to report on a successful Fall Leadership Interact Conference. Eric Chester paid a happy buck in celebration of only 7 more days of political robo calls. Bruce Moeller donated a buck in honor of his first time voting as an Arizona resident. Ida Kendall won the pot

Our Speaker for Last Meeting:

Phil Goode introduced Tyler Goodman, Assistant Prescott City Manager. Tyler reported on the “Change for the Better” initiative to alleviate homelessness and panhandling in the city. The first action was a marketing campaign to encourage residents to donate to the initiative rather than directly to individual panhandlers. Donation boxes have been placed with local businesses, service providers and faith based organizations as well as locating collection meters around downtown. A CCJ partnership was developed to provide work opportunities as an alternative to panhandling. Architectural features were constructed near sidewalks, street corners, and benches to discourage panhandling in certain areas. Tyler suggested that when money is donated for food, shelter, and other basic needs for use by reputable community service providers there is more accountability than when money is given directly on the street. The Mayor and Council are confident that “this initiative will have a positive impact on assisting those who truly

Good morning Sun-Up.  Noel DeSousa advises that our participation in the Caborca neo-natal equipment global grant gives us two reserved seats on the next Caborca Polio Plus trip scheduled for February 15-17, 2019 (Fri-Sat-Sun).  Cost of the trip (exclusive of lodging) is $175.  Lodging is estimated at $90 for both nights.  We need to confirm our participation and get names of attendees to Noel before the end of November.  If you have considered participating in this very worthwhile activity, let either me or John Stewart know of your interest soon.
