The Sunup Rotary Club
   Of Prescott, Arizona
NAME: CHUCK DeARMOND
HOMETOWN: Born In Reno, Nv., Reared In Elko, Nv
SCHOOLS: Graduated From Oklahoma A @ M In Chemical Engineering
FAMILY: Married To Fran, Has 3 Children, 4 Grandchildren & 2 Great Grandchildren.
HOBBIES: "Working For My Wife" Doing Honey-Dos
THINGS PEOPLE WOULD BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU: Was Montana State Speaking Champion While A Member Of Toastmasters. Came In 2nd Place In The Regional Competition. Had Rheumatic Fever As A Child And Spent Most Of A Year In Bed Recovering. Has Been Shot At With Intent To Kill Him.
MAJOR PET PEEVES: Politicians - You Name It. Promises They Can't Keep And Responsibilities They Don't Live Up To.
MOST INFLUENTIAL PERSON IN HIS LIFE: I Asked Chuck If He Was Close To His Father In Growing Up. His Father Was The State Of Nevada's Chief Surveyor And Was Gone A Lot Of The Time…….On Top Of That His Father Was A Workaholic And Went Well Beyond His Job Description To See That His Work Was Exact And Above Reproach. As A Result He Was Known Statewide And Was Highly Respected. When The Hoover Dam Was Being Constructed The State Needed Someone To Watch Over Nevada's Interest In The Distribution Of Water And Power Generated By The Dam And Because Of Chuck's Father's Reputation He Was Asked To Assume This Position And Did It For The Rest Of His Life. There Was Not A Lot Of Time For Father And Son To Interact But What Time They Had Together Was Extremely Beneficial. So The Answer To My Question As To If He Was Close To His Father In Growing Up Was A Quick "No". We Went On To Other Subjects And Near The End Of Our Visit I Asked Our Chuck "Who Was The Most Influential Person In His Life?" And His Immediate Answer Was "My Father". And The Reasons Were That His Father Set A Great Example For Him And Gave Him Something To "Live Up To For The Rest Of My Life". He Also Taught By Example What It Was To Have A Strong Work Ethic And A Honest Lifestyle. So Again We See That We Never Know What Influence We Will Have On Others Through Our Daily Actions And It Is Quality Time, Not Quantity Time, That Matters The Most.
THE REST OF THE STORY: Chuck DeArmond's Mother Knew That She Was Having Twins And As The Time Approached To The Big Day She Felt That It Would Be Better To Have Her Twins Born In Berkley, Ca. Where Her Sister Lived. So She Boarded The Train To Ca. And Made It To Reno, Nv., Where She Started Labor And Fate Intervened And Our Future Rotarian Had The Great Fortune Of Not Being Called A Californian For The Rest Of His Life.
During His College Days When The Sabers Of War Were Being Rattled Our Chuck Joined The University's R.O.T.C. Unit, Which Off To O.C.S. And Was Later Commissioned As Was Eventually Disbanded Just Before His Graduation So Upon His Graduation He Joined The Army And Was Sent Off To O.C.S. And Was Later Commissioned As A 2nd Lt. In The Corps Of Engineers And Eventually Sent Off To Guadalcanal, After Our Invasion Of That Island, To Rebuild Island's Inner Structures. After A Couple Of Years He Was Sent To The Philippines To Do The Same For Manila And Rebuild The Ports And Docks For Allied Shipping.
After The War Chuck Went To Work For Anaconda Copper Company In Great Falls Montana As A Chemical Analyst. During This Time He Decided To Go To Night School And Pickup Some Classes In Subjects In Areas That Would Help Him In Future Assignments With Anaconda. So He Started Studying Accounting And Business Law. It Was In One Of Those Classes That He Met His Soon To Be Bride And Life's Companion, Fran. Life Only Got Better From Then On.
Two Years Later Chuck Was Promoted Into Anaconda's Research Department As Supervisor Of Zink Research.
Doing That Job, Our Future Rotarian Came Up With A Better And More Efficient Zink Leaching Process From Zink Concentrate. After An Intellectual War With The Supervisor Of The Great Falls Refinery, He Won Him Over To The Efficiencies Of His New Process. Our Future Rotarian Was Earning A Very Respectful Reputation And Was Eventually Promoted To Anaconda's Home Office In New York City, Where He Headed Up All Of Anaconda's Zink Concentrate Purchases And Traveled All Over The World In The Process Of Doing This Job. On One Of His Visits To Japan He Even Gave A Short Speech In Japanese At A Welcoming Reception In His Honor.
Chuck Spent His Whole Working Career With Anaconda Copper Company And Retired In 1984.
In 1986 He And Fran Moved To Prescott To Be Near Their Son. They Had Owned Property Here Since 1964 And Loved Prescott And Our Great Lifestyle.
Overview: Although Chuck Takes A Lot Of Kidding About Being Sunupian's Methuselah He Has Earned This Club's Greatest Respect In The Ways In Which He Carries Out His Responsibilities And The Quality Of Human Being That He Is. Chuck Is A Big Part Of Our Snack Shack Successes And Is Always Right There To Help In Other Fund Raisers And Rotary Activities. We Are Tremendously Fortunate In Having This Man In Sunup Rotary And Celebrate With Him In His Living Such A Generous Life.
