Club Taught How to Reverse an Overdose with NARCAN
It
It was great to have Deputy County Attorney Dana Owens back with us, along with the amazing Erin Ortega, who not only directs the county's Diversion Program, both also works with the Narcan program.  The two of them explained how Naloxone/Narcan can save lives by reversing any kind of Opioid overdose.  Naloxone, the active ingredient in NARCAN® Nasal Spray, competes with Opioids to bind with the same receptors in the brain, reversing the effects of an opioid overdose in 2 to 3 minutes. This allows time for emergency medical help to arrive. They also told is that there are no detrimental side effects if the spray is used on someone who is not actually experiencing an Opioid overdose.

Dana, Laura and Eric show the boxes of NARCAN nasal spray which were given to all of our club members in attendance at last week's meeting, to keep in case such an emergency arises, and it is needed.  The boxes contained two nasal spray dispensers.  In most cases, they said, a single spray in the nostril of a person experiencing the effects of an Opioid overdose is sufficient to bring them around.  However, they advised standing clear of the person after using the spray, since they tend to awaken rather violently.

The Rotary Foundation — literally OUR Foundation — is in OUR hands, to both financially support, and to enable to leverage our club funds with the service projects which we choose to sponsor and support.

Today, April 15, is the deadline to take advantage of our club's annual Let's Make A Deal match for your contribution, to either make you a Paul Harris Fellow, or to elevate you to the next PHF-Plus level.

CLUB SERVICE
This Duck, handsomely wearing his sombrero, is reminding all of us that May 5th is the rapidly-approaching date of our Prescott Sunup Rotary Duck Derby, being held at Watson Lake.  Our lead time is vanishing, and the time has come to begin seriously working to get our 5,000 ducks adopted before the Day of the Duck Derby — Cinco de Mayo.

COMMUNITY SERVICE
Our Sunup Rotary Snack Shack will still be open and cooking the dogs on Tuesdays and Thursdays into May for Little League Majors.  Volunteers are still needed to help fill open shifts.

Here is the signup link:

Our Snack Shack both provides a community service, and it also makes some money for scholarships and other club service projects

Things I'm super good at:

> Forgetting someone's name 10 seconds after they tell me.

> Buying produce...and throwing it away two weeks later.

> Digging through the trash for the food box I just tossed, because I already forgot the directions.

> Making plans. And then immediately regretting making plans.

> Leaving laundry in the dryer until it wrinkles. Then turning on the dryer to dewrinkle. Then forgetting it again.

> Calculating how much sleep I'll get if I can just "fall asleep right now."

Every morning I get hit by the same bicycle. It's a vicious cycle.

Doctor: “Your problem is you sit too much.”

Patient: “I understand.”

Doctor: “Exactly!”
__

Trying to get my head around the fact that 'Take Out' can mean food, dating, or murder.
__

Somebody gave me a flyer on anger management. I admit, I lost it.
__

Someone said, "Nothing rhymes with orange." I said, "No, it doesn't."

My dog is half pit bull, half poodle. Not much of a watch dog, but an absolutely vicious gossip!

SELL THOSE DUCKS!!

I’ve been reflecting a bit lately about my time as Club president (yes, I know it’s only April!).  That reflection has been tremendously helpful for me- as a leader.  We are coming into high season for community service and our fundraiser and, if we remember the 4-way test plus one:  Have fun!  It’s supposed to be fun!

We are a team. We come from diverse backgrounds, we have different passions, and varied outlooks on life.  But we have all come together as Rotarians to make our communities and our world a better place.  I love the fun we have at meetings; and I love the fact that we do so much good while we’re having fun!

This month, you all have stepped up to cover the Snack Shack (thank you to all of you who are actively participating!) and we have the whole season almost filled-and  it’s not too late to sign up if you’d like! It’s a great way to get to know your fellow SunUpians, and those kids are so darn cute!

Thank you to the Scholarship committee who is currently reviewing the 15+ applications we’ve received for this year’s Scholarships- also fun, in a different way!

Now I’m asking all of you to enjoy more activity!  We have two different big events on the horizon and I’d love to see more of us SunUpians having fun!
  1. The Rotary Week of Service Tri-Club Food Drive is on Friday April 19 and Saturday, April 20.  Due to a lack of signups, it’s been condensed into 2 locations.  We are asking for 2 hours of your time on one of those days, between 8 am and 6 pm.  You can bring your kids, your partner or spouse, or even friends! This has got to be one of the easiest volunteer activities ever!  All you have to do is sit there, visit with folks, and let people give you food as they leave the grocery store (and you can sell them ducks if you are so inclined!).
  1. Duck Derby is May 5th and it’s not far away!  We will need all hands on-deck to assist on the 5th when the ducks will hit the water at Watson Lake.  And please- keep selling ducks!  Duck Derby will be over the top fun for all of us, and all of the families that join us that day!!!!
If fear of SignUp Genius is holding you back from the former, I’ll take that off the plate right now.  Tell me what day/time you want to work at the Food Drive and I will sign you up- on the spot!  If it’s the latter, fear of selling ducks- just ask someone to buy 1 duck for 5 dollars to support our scholarship program, or, you can always buy a bunch yourself- or both!  It’s that easy.

We all need to be involved!  As Helen Keller so wisely said, “Alone we can do little; together we can do so much.”  Let’s have fun and do so much!

Warm Regards,

Laura
