Sunup's Annual "Let's Make A Deal" Launched

Our club program last week launched Prescott Sunup Rotary's annual "Let's Make A Deal" fundraising campaign for The Rotary Foundation.  Art Harrington, our Rotary Foundation Chair, explained some of the many ways we are able to leverage the dollars we donate to TRF, enabling us to tackle and fund projects that would otherwise be far beyond our own resources to ever be able to accomplish.  Together, with other Rotary partners, and the use of The Rotary Foundation's District Grants and Global Grants, our club continues to do an incredible amount of good, both here in our community, and in other communities around the world.

It all begins, though, with the dollars which we, as Rotarians, donate to our Rotary Foundation each year.  As Art explained, our club needs to have a minimum per capita giving of $100, in order to qualify to sponsor either District or Global Grant Projects.  Consequently, we need to have each of our club members contributing at least $100 per year to The Rotary Foundation's Annual Fund.  A Paul Harris Fellow represents $1,000 having been given to TRF in an individual's name.  It is our club's goal to be a Paul Harris Fellow Club, with every one of our members at least at that $1,000 Paul Harris Fellow level.  You will notice that we have a Sunup Rotary Paul Harris Fellow Banner, which hangs on the wall at the front of the room.  It has pinned to it a gold badge of honor, bearing the name of each of our club's Paul Harris Fellows.

Prescott Sunup's "Let's Make A Deal" is our club's annual, limited-time offer, to help you become a Paul Harris Fellow, or to help raise you to the next PHF thousand-dollar level.  Between Jan. 1 and March 31 each year, our club will match, from its bank of TRF points, whatever TRF donation it will take to get you to the initial Paul Harris Fellow level, or to elevate you to the next PHF level.  Every club member will receive in the mail, within the next 1-2 weeks, a personal letter containing our club's individualized offer. If you agree to accept our deal, you can mail, by March 31, a check in that amount, payable to The Rotary Foundation, to Art Harrington, Rotary Foundation Chair, 802 Oak Terrace Drive, Prescott, AZ 86301.  Your check will be forwarded to TRF, along with the necessary paperwork to add our club's match to your contribution.  If you prefer, you can make an online donation, via Rotary's website, www.rotary.org,  However, if you donate online, be sure you are donating to the Annual Fund of The Rotary Foundation, and that you have selected "SHARE," instead of directing your gift to some other program.  If you make your "Let's Make A Deal" donation online, you will need to send to Art, arthts@msn.com, a copy of your receipt you receive for your gift, so we can use that to complete and submit the paperwork needed to get your club match.

It is also possible, using your "My Rotary" account, to set up monthly, quarterly or annual contributions to TRF.  Some of our members do that, while others prefer to have Eric add an amount to the quarterly invoice for their club dues.  However you choose to give, we thank you!  Your gifts the The Rotary Foundation are empowering our club to "Do Good In The World."

WELCOME, RUSS!!  President Laura presented Col. Russ Davis with his new member packet during his induction at Wednesday's Meeting.  His sponsor, Jon Berry, is standing next to him, preparing to attach his Rotary member pin to his collar.  Russ is the Commander of the Air Force ROTC unit at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott.

Members of our club's Duck Derby Committee met, following last Wednesday's club meeting, to assign committee responsibilities and to work on plans for the club's annual fundraiser.  Our Duck Derby will take place at Watson Lake on May 5, from 10:00 - 3:00 that day.  Individually-numbered Racing Ducks will soon be able to be adopted at the cost of $5 per duck. We will be seeking business sponsors for this major event.

THE WORD FROM ERIC CHESTER regarding payments to Sunup Rotary:

For all of you who are embracing online credit card payments--

On the Prescott SunUp Rotary website homepage, on the middle right hand side, you'll see a button that says "Square Payments".  If you click that button, it takes you to a page that lets you select a variety of SunUp-related items to pay through Square online credit card payment.

Not only can you pay your quarterly dues, you can also pay for the Holiday Party ($50.00) and your new member Initiation Fee ($100.00).

For the Holiday Party, once you select it, you will have the option to choose how many people you're paying for.

Talk about easy to use!  Give it a try if you haven't already embraced it!  And, of course, you can still pay with an old-fashioned check if you prefer!

SERVICE ABOVE SELF is our Rotary Motto.  But how are we expected to serve?  Every Rotary club is expected to be structurally organized around Rotary's 5 Avenues of Service.  They are intended to be the pillars supporting all that we do in our service to others.  They serve to guarantee that our Rotary service by our clubs is balanced, rather that focusing solely in one area.

YOUTH SERVICE

RYLA IS THIS WEEKEND:  Remember that RYLA, Rotary's award-winning leadership training program for high school age youth, gets underway this Friday at Camp Pinerock, here in Prescott.  Have you let A.J. Sheridan know if you have a pickup, and are willing to help transport RYLA delegates from the main camp out to the high ropes challenge course?

OUR ROTARY FLOAT in the Rose Parade on New Year's Day was a winner again this year.  With its theme, "Clean Water - The Music of Life,"
it won the Leishman Public Spirit Award.  It was judged to be the most outstanding floral presentation from a con-commercial participant by the Rose Parade Committee.  The parade had a music theme this year.  It is required that every aspect of a float in this parade be covered with something organic, such as seeds and flowers.

THE ROTARY FLOAT  each year is an enormous project involving work by hundreds of volunteers, such as the ones in the photo above.  They were in the process of placing some of the thousands of flowers which were used to create this year's float.  It is important to note that none of your Rotary dues, or any of your Rotary Foundation contributions, are used to pay for these annual Rotary entries in the Rose Parade.  They have always been paid for by the individual and club contributions of Rotarians who believe in the value of communicating a message from Rotary through these floats to the millions of viewers of this parade, both those who view it in person, and those to whom the videocast of the parade is beamed around the world every year.

WHERE WE BEGAN:  The first Rotary Float entered in a Rose Parade was the one pictured below.  It was entered in the 1923 Rose Parade, and was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Pasadena, CA.

There was once a handyman who had a dog named Mace. Mace was a great dog except he had one weird habit: he liked to eat grass -- not just a little bit, but in quantities that would make a lawnmower blush. And nothing, it seemed, could cure him of it. One day, the handyman lost his wrench in the tall grass while he was working outside. He looked and looked, but it was nowhere to be found.

As it was getting dark, he gave up for the night and decided to look the next morning. When he awoke, he went outside and saw that his dog had eaten all the grass in the area, around where he had been working, and his wrench now lay in plain sight, glinting in the sun.

Going out to get his wrench, he called the dog over to him and said, "A grazing Mace, how sweet the hound, that saved a wrench for me."

Last night our WIFI stopped working, so I spent a few hours with my family. They seem like good people.

An eighty-year-old couple, having problems remembering, go to the doctor to get checked out. He tells them that they are physically OK, but they might want to start writing things down to help them remember.

Later that night, while watching TV, the old man gets up from his chair. His wife asks, “Where are you going?”

“To the kitchen,” he replies. She asks for a bowl of ice cream. “Sure,” he replies. She then says, “Don’t you think you should write it down so you can remember.”

“No,” he says, “I can remember that.” “Well,” she says, “Then I also would like some strawberries on top, so you’d better write that down ‘cause I know you’ll forget.”

He says, “I can remember that, you want a bowl of ice cream with strawberries.” “I also would like whipped cream on top. I know you will forget that, so you better write it down.”

With irritation in his voice, he replies, “I don’t need to write that down, I can remember that,” and fumes off into the kitchen.

When he returns some twenty minutes later he hands her a plate of bacon and eggs. She stares at the plate for a moment and says, “You forgot my toast!“

Now that we’ve gotten this new year off on the right foot 😉, let’s keep that ball rolling!

Here’s a fun fact! Friday, January 12th is National Hot Tea Day.  I know we have tea drinkers in our Club, and with the cold weather this week...

Here's how to celebrate: Enjoy a steaming cup of tea, or, if you're an iced tea drinker, raise a glass, and know that you're contributing to the 75-80% of all the tea consumption in the US!

Personally, I'm an occasional herbal tea enthusiast and I love a hot cup of tea! And, I had a thought- why not share that tea and catch up with a friend? Make it in person, a phone call, a Facetime, Skype or Zoom and share some tea! If you were looking for an excuse to catch up with someone, there you have it!

We know that tea is good for our health. It soothes the nervous system and helps us relax, it's high in anti-oxidants and can reduce our risk of stroke, heart attack, diabetes and cancer, too (Pennmedicine.org, Dec. 9, 2019). Combine all that goodness with the goodness of social connection and we just amp up all the benefits! What kind of tea will you drink? Who will you connect with to share that cup? Enjoy!!!

Make it a warm mug of tea kind of week!

Warm Regards,
Laura
