Teen's "Better Together" Encourages Constructive Conversations on Controversial Subjects

Sophia Brown, from Prescott High School, and Toby Chang, from BASIS Prescott, both members of the Teen Advisory Council sponsored by Launch Pad, presented to our club the "Better Together" initiative which they helped develop over the past several years.  From their Council's surveys, they documented the fact that our community is divided by polarized viewpoints on a number of controversial topics.  They found there is little dialogue between those holding differing opinions, with people tending to only discuss these subjects with those who are known to share their own viewpoints.  Consequently, their Teen Advisory Council is working, through the "Better Together" program, including a guidebook they have developed, to advocate setting up and conducting constructive dinner conversations among people with opposing views.  They have developed principles and guidelines for those dinner conversations, and their teenage members are willing to serve as facilitators for any of these discussions.  President Laura emailed to each of our members a PDF copy of the Teen Advisory Council's "Better Together Guidebook."

Sophia, who is a member and leader in the PHS Interact Club, also revealed that she has been selected to serve this summer as a member of the 2024 Interact Ambassadors to Kenya team  Our Rotary club sponsors the PHS Interact Club, and we have been strong supporters of the Interact Crutches 4 Africa / Ambassadors program.  Sophia announced that the PHS Interact Club is sponsoring a fundraiser at the Colt Grill on April 17.  She had $20 dinner tickets for the barbecue dinner with her, and she noted she was leaving tickets with Art Harrington, for club members to purchase at this week's club meeting.

CLUB MEMBER SUPPORT FOR THE ROTARY FOUNDATION is one of the most basic elements of Rotary.  By pooling our funds together through our 4-Star-Rated Charitable Foundation, we can do so much more together, than we could ever accomplish as an individual Rotarian, or as a single Rotary Club.  "Let's Make A Deal" is our own club's annual fundraiser for TRF's Annual Fund SHARE program. Our goal is to have a 100% Paul Harris Club.  The usual March 31 deadline for making your "Let's Make a Deal" contribution to TRF, and to get a dollar-for-dollar match by our club, has been extended to April 15 this year — but April 15 is next week.  Remember to bring your check, payable to The Rotary Foundation, to this week's meeting — or make an online donation via the rotary.org website, and provide Art with the receipt from your donation.

A man came home from work and found his three children outside, still in their pajamas, playing in the mud, with empty food boxes and wrappers strewn all around the front yard. The door of his wife's car was open, as was the front door to the house and there was no sign of the dog.

Proceeding into the entry, he found an even bigger mess. A lamp had been knocked over, and the throw rug was wadded against one wall. In the front room the TV was loudly blaring a cartoon channel, and the family room was strewn with toys and various items of clothing. In the kitchen, dishes filled the sink, breakfast food was spilled on the counter, the fridge door was open wide, dog food was spilled on the floor, a broken glass lay under the table, and a small pile of sand was spread by the back door.

He quickly headed up the stairs, stepping over toys and more piles of clothes, looking for his wife. He was worried she might be ill, or that something serious had happened. He was met with a small trickle of water as it made its way out the bathroom door. As he peered inside he found wet towels, scummy soap and more toys strewn over the floor. Miles of toilet paper lay in a heap and toothpaste had been smeared over the mirror and walls.

As he rushed to the bedroom, he found his wife still curled up in the bed in her pajamas, reading a novel. She looked up at him, smiled, and asked how his day went. He looked at her bewildered and asked, ‘What happened here today?'

She again smiled and answered, "You know every day when you come home from work and you ask me what in the world I do all day?"

"Yes," was his incredulous reply.

She answered, "Well, today I didn't do it."

Not to brag, but I was alive when you could SLAM the phone down to hang up on someone. It was spectacular.

A pastor assured his congregation he was their servant and that they should feel free to call him anytime they had a problem.

That night the pastor's phone rang at 3 a.m. On the other end was a dear elderly lady who said, "Pastor, I can't sleep."

"I'm so sorry to hear that," he comforted her. "But what can I do about it?" the pastor asked.

She sweetly replied, "Preach to me a while, pastor."

I'm really excited for the amateur autopsy club I just joined...Wednesday is open Mike night!

For Sale:  My White Privilege Card
Over 50 years old, but in mint condition.
Never been used.
Reason for selling:  It hasn’t done anything for me!
No free college, no free food, no free housing, no free anything.
I’ve had to go to work every day of my life, while paying a boatload of taxes to carry those who choose not to work!

If interested, I prefer cash, but am willing to do an even trade fir a Victim Card, which seems much more widely accepted, and comes with countless benefits.

I recently read Dr. Sanjay Gupta's book, Keep Sharp: Build A Better Brain at Any Age (2020). It was a fascinating read, full of the very latest research and understanding about our brains, and the importance of taking care of them- not just when we're older, but right now, because it turns out, the way we do that in our 30s, 40s or 50s affects what happens when we hit our 60s, 70s and 80s- significantly!

It turns out that it's just not good enough to do crossword puzzles to keep our brains healthy. Science has now shown that the brain needs good sleep, nutrition, exercise, learning, purpose and social connection to remain optimally functioning as we age. Sure, we all have a little short term memory loss as we age, but if we don't take care, cognitive decline may have a significant,
and negative impact, on your life.

Perhaps you're already doing things to take care of yourself- if so, good for you! Keep it up! If not, how about getting started on something that will improve your life- now and as you age?  What would that be?  What would be different?

Make it a great week!
Be well & see you Wednesday!
Sell Ducks!!!!!!

Warm Regards,

Laura
