Yavapai County Leads with Pretrial Diversion Program
PE Christy Manning, Deputy County Attorney Dana Owens, Pretrial Diversion Program Director Erin Ortega, and Tom Benson

We were inspired at last Wednesday's meeting with the presentation by Erin Ortega and Dana Owens of Yavapai County's pioneering Pretrial Diversion Program.  The program was introduced by Tom Benson, one of our club's Honorary Members.

The Yavapai County Attorney's Office has established a Pretrial Diversion Program to provide an alternative method of holding low level offenders, whose offense has a nexus to substance abuse, accountable for violations of the law through participation in an evidence-based education or treatment program that targets factors related to recidivism. The Program effectively redirects limited criminal justice resources, brings about participants' rehabilitation, and gives rise to safer communities. The Program diverts criminal cases from formal court proceedings and allows for the dismissal of charges if the Program is successfully completed.

It is interesting that this program is supervised by Deputy County Attorney Dana Owens, who was honored by the Arizona State Bar Association with the 2022 Distinguished Public Lawyer Award for her role as a successful prosecutor.  However Dana strongly believe in this program, which gives some people a second chance, enabling them to avoid criminal prosecution and developing a criminal record.

Making Rotary "Simply Irresistible"

If you have not read the article on page 42 yet in the February issue of the Rotary Magazine, which you probably just received in the mail, I encourage you to read this interview with Stephanie Urchick, our Rotary International President for 2024-2025.  She has some worthwhile things to say about how we can make our Rotary clubs "Simply Irresistible."  I recently had the opportunity to spend a half-hour visiting with her about some common concerns.  She is a personal friend, with whom I have had the privilege of working in the past. I was pleased when she was chosen to be Rotary's second woman President.  I am confident she will do a great job leading our organization.  She has much to offer. -- Art Harrington

Bidding at a local auction was proceeding furiously when the auctioneer suddenly announced, "A gentleman in this room has lost a wallet containing $10,000. If it is returned, he will pay a reward of $2,000."

There was a moment's silence, and then from the back of the room came the cry, "Two thousand five hundred!"

After a couple of airplane trips and subsequent short illnesses this year (I have since started wearing an N95 mask on the airplane and in crowded airport areas), the microbiologist in me feels compelled to write a bit about how to help yourself stay healthy this winter season.

I know it’s a reminder, and nothing will protect you 100%, but if you can do these things, you'll minimize the likelihood of coming down with an illness.

-Wash your hands frequently and/or use hand sanitizer. You have to rub your hands for about
15-20 seconds (sing Happy Birthday to yourself) for either of these to be effective.  I’m a huge fan of keeping hand sanitizer in the car and giving myself a squirt after I’ve been in a store or pumping gas!

-Minimize touching your face with your hands. We do this about 200 times per day! When you've touched something or someone that may be contaminated and you then touch your face,
you increase the chance of your coming down with it.  Viruses like the common cold one can survive on surfaces for an extended period of time- the object you touch doesn’t have to feel like it’s been slimed to be contaminated on its surface!

-Get enough sleep, eat healthy, and minimize stress. When your body gets run down, your immune system doesn't work as well, hence you're more likely to come down with something.

-Take black elderberry. It is the only evidence-based, scientifically proven immune system booster currently on the market (Barak et al., 2001).  Or, as my sister swears by, Airborne, or some other immune booster/protector that you know works for you.

-Minimize your time around people that you know are sick. The converse of this is that if you
are the one who's sick, stay home. Don't share. Don’t come to Rotary!  Your friends, coworkers and anyone else you might expose will thank you for it.

Stay healthy & see you soon!

Warm Regards,
Laura
