Shootout at Gunsite
Sunup Rotary members were treated to an exciting and informative day after our meeting last Wednesday. Traveling up Hwy. 89, we gathered in a classroom at Gunsite Academy in Paulden. Gunsite is located on a sprawling 2,800 acres encompassing 20 shooting ranges.

The first part of the morning was spent with the Gunsite COO Ken Campbell explaining how to safely handle firearms around the shooting range. Then it was out to the range where we had the opportunity to try out 9mm and .45 caliber pistols with expert instructors at our side. Greg Barstad brought his shot gun that many of us tried.

After lunch, fellow Rotarian and Gunsite Marketing Director Jane Anne Shimizu gave us a tour of the grounds. Many thanks to Jane Anne and Val Ripley for setting this up.
Meeting Highlights April 11
Opening Day Little League Crew:  A nice crew of Mike's Opening Day Little League cookout smiled for the camera.

Great ExtractionsGus Bergman was Sergeant-at-Arms and enlisted fellow Sgt. Clent Walker to tote the spittoon. Lots of members made news and paid and a lot of good happy bucks.  Art Harrington celebrated his birthday by winning the pot.

Speaker on 4/11:   Tim Carter, chair of Yavapai County Education, discussed "Teacher of the Year" then fielded questions on the imbalance of teacher to facility funding. He does feel Gov. Ducey is working hard to increase K-12 funding against his no tax increase stance when he ran for governor in 2014.

Greetings My Fellow “Wicked Good” Sunupians!

Welcome to a Blustery Spring! Pretty amazing winds the past few days, and how about those winter-like temperatures?

Rather than entertain you this week with random Rotarian thoughts, I will share the following information and questions to reflect on: On Friday, I attended an informal meeting with presidents and representatives of other area clubs. Our District Governor Nancy Van Pelt and Assistant District Governor Noel DeSousa (soon to be executive DG) at my favorite spot, the Wild Iris Coffee Shop.  Nancy was checking in with us as we are drawing closer to the end of our tenure in June, and we had some good discussions.

One interesting point that was raised is trying to attract new members, both here and in the District. Many of them are struggling to identify what their club and Rotary is all about, as times have changed. Do we really know, and we all agree on, what Sunup is all about in the current time? What is our “elevator speech” when explaining Sunup? Good thing to think about. It’s really the purpose of the future of the Sunup Committee.

The challenge is this: What is our identity within Rotary and in our community? Where do we want to take the club in terms of that identity, and what are our opportunities to make that happen? I leave you to ponder these questions and perhaps prepare to move ahead with Neal McEwen in the not too distant future.

‘Till Wednesday, Peace friends,

A.J.
